History of the F1 Spanish GP
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was constructed as part of the preparations for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Work began with the laying of the foundation stone in 1989, and the track hosted its first car race in 1991 during the Spanish Touring Car Championship.
Just two weeks after the touring cars hit the track, Formula 1 drivers took center stage. The inaugural F1 race at the circuit delivered an unforgettable moment, featuring Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna in an intense, side-by-side sprint down the straight. Mansell eventually claimed victory, setting the stage for the track’s place in F1 standings history.

Formula 1 teams have a special appreciation for the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as it’s a track they know inside out from countless laps during winter testing. Its mix of high- and low-speed corners, including the demanding Turn 3 right-hander, provides an excellent opportunity to assess car balance and prepare for the challenges of the F1 season.
