History of the F1 Abu Dhabi GP
In 2006, plans were unveiled to transform Yas Island, located just east of Abu Dhabi, into a major tourist destination. Central to this vision was a 5.5km race track. Construction of what would become the Yas Marina Circuit began in May 2007, and the project was completed by October 2009.
The Yas Marina Circuit held its inaugural Grand Prix in 2009, serving as the season finale of the Formula 1 schedule. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel claimed victory, finishing ahead of his teammate Mark Webber and the already-crowned 2009 champion, Jenson Button. The following year, Vettel would go on to secure his first Formula 1 title in Abu Dhabi, marking an emotional moment in his career.
Max’s First Championship
Max Verstappen secured his first Formula 1 championship in a thrilling and controversial showdown with Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Tied on points going into the race, Verstappen capitalized on a late safety car period, setting up a one-lap sprint to the finish. With both F1 drivers tied on points, Verstappen, on fresher tires, overtook Hamilton, securing his first-ever title in a moment that will go down as one of the most iconic in F1 history
Circuit Specifications
- Corners: 16
- DRS Zones: 2
- Pit Stop Strategies: One-Stop Strategy
- Most Used Tires: Medium to Hard tires
The track, designed by Hermann Tilke, features a standout 1.2km straight between Turns 5 and 6. This section, with slow-speed corners at both ends, provides a prime spot for overtaking maneuvers. Other key challenges include the complex sequence from Turns 10 to 12, where drivers must brake sharply while managing significant lateral forces on the car.
In preparation for the 2021 race, track modifications slightly shortened the lap to 5.28km, further increasing the excitement for F1 teams.
