There have been many complaints about how boring the Monaco GP has become from a fan’s perspective. It’s true that it’s a historic race in the sport, and F1 drivers love racing on this iconic circuit. But the lack of overtakes — if any — is a major issue. The track is so narrow and the cars so long that the winner is often decided in qualifying, with the pole-sitter having a huge advantage.
To address this, for the 2025 Monaco GP, the FIA will introduce a new rule: each driver will be required to make two pit stops during the race. This change forces teams to carefully plan their strategies. Since overtaking on track is nearly impossible, the new rule means drivers will have to manage their tyres more wisely, and F1 teams will need to build alternative race scenarios that increase their chances of winning with their driver pair.
- Pirelli will supply special tyres for the event, with all compounds featuring higher-than-usual degradation, effectively pushing teams to commit to a two-stop race.
- The FIA confirmed that this rule will apply in both wet and dry conditions. F1 drivers must run three different sets of tyres, with at least two different compounds used over the course of the race.
Monaco GP Preview
Monaco will be the second race in the European triple-header. Max Verstappen comes in strong after Imola, once again proving that his talent goes beyond the raw performance of his car. The Dutch driver currently sits third in the F1 standings and will be looking to keep fighting against the McLaren duo.
McLaren is starting to feel the pressure. It’s widely accepted that they currently have the fastest car on the grid, and should be scoring 1-2 finishes in most races. Lando Norris has had a tough run lately, especially in qualy, where he’s only managed one pole position across the entire F1 calendar. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri has shown excellent pace, but he still lacks the experience and aggressiveness to go wheel-to-wheel with a lion like Max.
F1 Sprint News predicts a win for the Australian — but only if he secures pole.
