History of the F1 Austrian GP

The original and challenging Österreichring was constructed in 1969, replacing the Zeltweg airfield circuit. The modern track, now known as the Red Bull Ring, emerged during the winter of 1995-96 when Hermann Tilke redesigned the Österreichring into a shorter, more contemporary circuit suitable for Formula 1 drivers.

The revamped circuit, initially named the A1-Ring, officially opened in 1996, with Formula 1 making its return a year later during the 1997 F1 season. Jacques Villeneuve claimed victory in that inaugural race, while Jean Alesi made headlines with a dramatic crash after his Benetton climbed over Eddie Irvine’s Ferrari. Meanwhile, Gerhard Berger used his home Grand Prix to announce his retirement, marking a memorable chapter in his F1 career.

Circuit Specifications

  • Corners: 10
  • DRS Zones: 3
  • Pit Stop Strategies: One-Stop Strategy. The circuit’s layout, featuring multiple high-speed straights and heavy braking zones, leads to substantial tire degradation.
  • Most Used Tires: Start on medium (C4) tires, then switch to hard (C3) tires

Though compact in size, the Red Bull Ring delivers big thrills within its short lap. The first half of the track is all about raw power, with Formula 1 teams pushing their cars to the limit along three fast straights, connected by two uphill right-handers.

As the circuit transitions downhill, it turns into a rollercoaster ride, challenging drivers with a series of fast, flowing corners. Among them is the iconic Rindt right-hander, named in honor of Austria’s first F1 champion. It’s a place where every second counts, keeping the F1 standings tight and the competition fierce.
