History of the F1 Monza GP
Built in just 110 days in 1922, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza became the third purpose-built racetrack in the world, following Brooklands in the UK and Indianapolis in the US. Like those iconic tracks, the original layout included challenging banked corners, along with sections of the ‘outfield’ that remain part of the circuit today.
Monza opened on September 3, 1922, just one week before hosting its inaugural Italian Grand Prix. The track became a fixture on the Formula 1 calendar in 1950 and has been the venue for the Italian GP every year except one.
The Temple of Speed
Often referred to as the “Temple of Speed,” the Autodromo Nazionale Monza is renowned for its high-speed straights and thrilling corners, making it a true test for both drivers and cars. As a staple of the F1 schedule, Monza holds a special place in the hearts of Formula 1 teams, who push their machines to the limit on this iconic circuit.
The average speed during a Formula 1 race at Monza typically ranges between 250 km/h and 260 km/h, depending on weather and track conditions, making it one of the fastest circuits of the season. It’s also a venue where every point in the F1 standings matters, with teams racing to secure valuable positions.

Fast! McLaren’s Lando Norris posted an average speed of 263 km/h during his pole lap in 2024, offering a glimpse into the characteristics of the track, affectionately known by locals as ‘La Pista Magica.’ F1 drivers spend around 80% of the lap with the throttle wide open, reaching their maximum speed on the 1.1 km start/finish straight.
From there, they charge into the iconic park section, where a series of heavy braking zones and tight chicanes challenge both the drivers and their car’s braking systems.
